Heel Spurs and Treatment

Heel spurs are bony growths from the bottom of the ‘heel bone’ in the foot.  X-rays are necessary to diagnose heel spurs because all heel pain may not be associated with heel spurs.  Heel spurs become painful when inflammation develops where the spur is forming.  Heel spurs may even develop without pain.  Treatment may include a change of shoe gear, orthotics, anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone shots or a through a non-invasive treatment using ultrasonic sound waves to promote healing.  The majority of heel pain is successfully treated conservatively however, if all treatments fail, surgery may be necessary.
