The Difference Between Hammer Toe and Mallet Toe
In most people’s feet, the big toe has two bones and the others have three bones. These three bones are separated by two joints.
If the joint closest to the ankle is contracted, this is called a “hammer toe.” If the second joint (closer to the toenail) is contracted, this is called a “mallet toe.” When both of these joints are contracted, this is called a “claw toe.” In most cases, these conditions can be treated surgically through small incisions requiring only a stitch or two.
