What’s Causing Thick Toenails?

Have you noticed a change in your toenails recently? Are they thicker? If so, you could have a fungal infection. Fungal infections can cause a wide range of symptoms and changes to the appearance of the nail, including thickening of the toenail, discoloration, and other changes to the texture of the nail, including brittleness or softness. However, other medical conditions such as psoriasis and diabetes, or bacterial infections can also cause similar symptoms.

How Do I Know If I Have a Fungal Infection?

Some common symptoms of toenail fungus include thick toenails, broken, misshaped, yellow nails, and loose or separated nails. If you have a fungal infection, leaving it untreated can allow it to spread to other toenails, fingernails, or other parts of the skin.

How to Prevent Toenail Fungus

While it sounds like common sense, it is important to remember to always practice proper foot hygiene. This means washing your feet regularly with soap and water, and carefully drying your feet, with attention to the areas in between your toes. When you cut your nails, always make sure to cut straight across, to avoid the risk of ingrown toenails.
